Silent Film Royalty: Charlie Chaplin, WC Fields, Harold Lloyd, and John Barrymore
Masterfully colorized, funnyman Charlie Chaplin stands proudly in the center of the group with his hands on his hips, flanked by other silent film greats like WC Fields, Harold Lloyd, and John Barrymore. The image is made even greater by the fact that all of the players are dressed in their signature outfits. This vintage photograph not only is excellent in composition but also because of its rarity of capturing a moment when these titans of cinema were all together.
Charlie Chaplin was an English actor, comedian, and filmmaker, who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His popular films include "Circus Lights," "The Kid," and "Modern Times."
William Claude Dukenfield, W.C. Fields, was an American comedian, actor, and writer. Fields is well known for his snarky but kind character. This portrayal was so strongly associated with Fields that it is still assumed by many that this was what his natural character was like.
Harold Lloyd ranks alongside Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton as one of the most popular and influential film comedians of the silent film era. Lloyd made nearly 200 comedy films, both silent and "talkies" between 1914 and 1947. He is best known for his "Glasses" character, a success-seeking go-getter who was perfectly in tune with 1920s era United States.
John Barrymore was an American actor of stage, screen and radio. He first gained attention as a handsome stage actor in light comedy, then high drama and culminating in his portrayals in Shakespearean plays Hamlet and Richard III. His success continued with motion pictures in various genres in both the silent and sound eras.
